Quick answer

A New Zealand business lender usually runs a credit check on the business and its directors once you decide to proceed, not when you first enquire. The report shows identity details, defaults, previous credit enquiries and, increasingly, repayment history. Enquiries are logged and visible to other lenders. You can request your own credit information free from each credit reporter, who must respond within 10 working days.

Key points

  • No credit check is needed to make an initial enquiry with us
  • Lenders check once you choose to proceed, with your agreement
  • Credit enquiries are logged and can be seen by other lenders
  • Free access to your own credit information within 10 working days

“Will this affect my credit?” is one of the first questions business owners ask when they apply online. It is a good question. A credit check is not harmful in itself, but when and how often it happens matters. Here is how it works in New Zealand business lending.

When does a credit check happen?

Not at the start. With us, the 60-second online enquiry does not involve a credit check. You can find out what is realistic without anything being recorded on your file.

A credit check usually happens later, once:

  1. you have spoken with a specialist;
  2. a suitable option and lender have been identified; and
  3. you have agreed to proceed with an application.

At that point the lender obtains your credit information with your agreement, typically for the business and for each director or guarantor.

What does a credit report show?

SectionWhat it contains
IdentityName, date of birth, addresses, and for companies, registration details
Credit enquiriesA log of recent requests for your credit information by lenders and others
DefaultsOverdue debts reported by creditors, and whether paid
Repayment historyIncreasingly, whether accounts are paid on time
Public recordsJudgments, insolvency information and company records
Credit scoreSome reporters generate a score from the information

Under the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020, credit reporters keep an access log of who has requested your information, and your report includes this “previous enquiry record”.

Why do multiple enquiries matter?

Each time a lender checks your credit for an application, it is usually logged. Other lenders can see those enquiries. One or two are normal. A cluster of enquiries in a few weeks can look like you have been applying everywhere and getting turned down — even if that is not what happened.

This is the hidden cost of spray-and-pray lending, where one enquiry is sent to many lenders at once and several of them run checks. A matched approach — one team, one carefully chosen lender — keeps your file clean. It is one of the reasons we work the way we do.

How do you get your own credit information?

You have the right to ask each credit reporter operating in New Zealand for your information. Under rule 6 of the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020:

  • standard access is free;
  • the reporter must respond as soon as reasonably practicable and within 10 working days;
  • if you want it faster (within 3 working days), a small fee may apply;
  • if the reporter produces a credit score, it must give you the score on the same basis as it gives other agencies, with a statement about how it is calculated.

Checking your own report before applying is smart. It lets you spot errors and prepare explanations for anything genuine.

What if something on your report is wrong?

Ask the credit reporter to correct it. Under rule 7 of the code, it must take reasonable steps to ensure information is accurate, up to date, complete and not misleading. While it investigates, it must either suppress the disputed information or mark it as disputed. Corrections are free. If it does not correct the information, you can ask for a statement of your view to be attached.

Do business and personal credit both count?

Usually. For a company, lenders look at the company’s own credit profile and at the personal files of its directors, particularly those signing personal guarantees. For sole traders, the personal file is the business file. Past issues on a director’s personal file can affect a company’s application. Read bad credit business loans online if that applies to you.

Worked example (illustrative): a Wellington design studio director requests her credit information before applying. She finds a default for a phone account she closed two years ago and paid in full. She asks the reporter to update it as paid, and mentions it briefly in her enquiry. The lender sees a corrected file and a clear explanation.

How long do enquiries and defaults stay on a file?

Retention periods are set by the Credit Reporting Privacy Code and differ by type of information. Older information generally carries less weight with lenders than recent information. If you want exact retention periods for your situation, ask the credit reporter when you request your report.

Do soft and hard enquiries exist in New Zealand?

You will hear the terms. In general conversation, a “soft” check is one that does not affect how other lenders see you, while a “hard” enquiry is logged as an application for credit. How a particular check is recorded depends on its purpose and the credit reporter’s rules under the code, and some types of enquiry are excluded from credit scores. If it matters to you, ask the lender exactly what kind of enquiry it will make and whether it will appear to other lenders before you agree. A straightforward answer is a good sign.

How can you prepare your credit before applying?

Request your own reports a few weeks before you plan to apply. Check that addresses and company details are current, that paid defaults show as paid, and that there are no accounts you do not recognise. Pay any small overdue bills that might be reported. Then keep new credit applications to a minimum in the run-up to your loan, so the file the lender sees is calm and current.

Explore your options first, credit check later

Our enquiry takes about a minute and leaves your credit file untouched. Your details are not pushed out to a herd of lenders; one team reads them, and a real person calls. Please tell us about any past credit issues accurately — it helps us choose a lender whose policy fits before any check is run. Start your enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Will sending an online enquiry show on my credit file?

Not with us. Our enquiry does not involve a credit check. A check is discussed only once you decide to go ahead with a specific option.

Do lenders check the business or the directors?

Often both. A company has its own credit profile, and directors' personal files are usually checked too, especially if they are giving guarantees.

How do I get my own credit report?

Request it from each of the credit reporters operating in New Zealand. Under the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020, standard access is free and must be provided within 10 working days.

What if my report is wrong?

Ask the credit reporter to correct it. Under the code, it must take reasonable steps to make sure information is accurate and may mark disputed information while it checks.

Do many enquiries hurt my chances?

They can. A cluster of recent enquiries can suggest you have been declined elsewhere. Applying through a matched process, rather than to many lenders at once, avoids that.

Ready when you are. Start online.

The enquiry takes about a minute on any device. Nothing touches your credit file at this stage, your details stay with one team, and a person — not a bot — calls you back.
